World Diabetes Day is celebrated annually on November 14th with the aim of raising awareness about diabetes, focusing on different aspects of the disease, such as prevention, education, diagnosis, and treatment.

In this regard, Taipas Termal will mark the date by promoting an educational and preventative action, offering free capillary blood glucose screenings accompanied by relevant instruction.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively. Insulin is a hormone necessary for the body to convert sugar, starch, and other foods into energy.

There are two main types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 diabetes : The body does not produce insulin. Usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence.
  2. Type 2 diabetes : The body does not use insulin effectively. It is more common in adults, but can also affect children, especially with increasing obesity.
  3. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy, but often disappears after childbirth.

How can it be prevented?

Preventing type 2 diabetes involves lifestyle changes, such as:

  • A healthy diet (rich in fiber, fruits, and vegetables, and low in refined sugars and saturated fats).
  • Regular exercise (at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as walking, 5 days a week).
  • Maintaining a healthy weight .
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption .

This day serves as an important reminder of the importance of early diagnosis and proper management of diabetes to prevent complications such as heart, kidney, vision, and neuropathy problems.
