“Psychologists are for crazy people,” “Why go to a psychologist?” are expressions that are very common to hear in conversations these days. The field of psychology continues to be the target of much prejudice and associated stigma, which leads to a devaluation of mental health as well as psychological support.
Since today, September 4th, marks Psychologist's Day, it is important to clarify some notions about this profession, which is so essential in everyone's life, in order to try to change its perspective and prevent it from continuing to be overlooked.
Being a psychologist is much more than just having a degree in psychology. It's much more than sitting and listening to someone vent. It's not just about taking notes while the other person talks. The profession of psychology is special because, through conversations, ideas, and venting, one understands and analyzes the particularities of each individual.
Being a psychologist is about listening without judging, having empathy, putting yourself in someone else's shoes, feeling their emotions, actively listening, deconstructing and simplifying ideas, changing ways of thinking, helping people find a new direction in their lives, assisting in decision-making and problem-solving. It's about showing the beautiful and positive side of life.
At Taipas Termal we have a Mental Health and Therapy Unit team should you require psychological support. It is important not to be swayed by stereotypes and prejudices associated with the psychology profession; therefore, it is fundamental that we preserve and prioritize our mental health.
