Taipas Termal welcomes Dr. Joana Pinto, who will be offering Neuropsychology consultations on Saturday afternoons at our facilities.

What is neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a specialty within Psychology that links to Neurology. It assesses and treats individuals with cognitive impairment (e.g., memory loss, disorientation) and brain injury. Symptoms that may lead an individual to consult a neuropsychologist include alterations in various cognitive functions, namely: memory, orientation, language, reasoning, and planning and executive functioning.

Objectives of cognitive rehabilitation/stimulation:

  • Minimize brain damage;
  • To help recover lost or diminished abilities;
  • To prevent the development of other cognitive deficits;
  • Develop strategies to increase individual autonomy;
  • Psychoeducational sessions for the user and their family.

Which diagnoses can benefit from rehabilitation?

All neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, encephalitis, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injuries, among others. Regarding progressive neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia, the goal of cognitive rehabilitation is to slow the progression of the disease. The cognitive rehabilitation plan is adapted to each individual and aims to stimulate neural plasticity.

Areas of Intervention

  • Stroke (CVA);
  • Traumatic brain injury;
  • Huntington's disease;
  • Multiple Sclerosis;
  • Epilepsy;
  • Alzheimer's;
  • Parkinson's;
