The family is an important foundation in the development of the individual, in the creation of their identity and in the development of their skills, playing a vital role in the well-being of its members.
It is within family relationships that individuals learn to relate to others, and where they live their first affective experiences. It is here that they learn to communicate – from verbal to non-verbal language (body signals) – where they learn about brotherhood and the norms of society – what is “right” and “wrong”, and where they learn to recognize and express their emotions.
Composed of different people, with different characteristics, and with their own ways of interacting, each family is thus defined as a dynamic social system that is constantly developing, creating barriers with the outside world through which it exchanges information and receives feedback.
These existing differences between its constituent members and the recurring changes that occur within it can affect not only its functioning but also the psychological well-being of each individual, since family relationships are considered a determining factor for mental health. In these cases, the need for specialized help may arise, namely Family Therapy.
This specialty, derived from Clinical Psychology, focuses essentially on interaction problems between family members and seeks to promote/improve communication; help recognize and improve dysfunctional behaviors; invest in individual and family knowledge, understanding the role of each constituent member; work on emotional intelligence; provide support in specific problems that may impact family functioning – e.g., difficulties in relationships with families of origin; mediation in divorce situations; parental difficulties; illness of one of the members; situations of loss or bereavement; challenges of blended families; issues related to sexuality; "empty nest" situations, when children leave home; among others.
Thus, if you are experiencing any of the aforementioned (or other) problems, or if you simply wish to improve dialogue and understanding among the various members, we offer Family Psychology services.
