International Women's Day

Posted by José Gomes on

March 8th is celebrated as International Women's Day, officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 1975. This date celebrates women's achievements in society, but also serves as a reminder of the gender inequality, discrimination, and prejudice that persist in the society in which we live.

For this reason, we must reflect on whether this is a day to congratulate women and offer flowers (for example), or a day to ponder the inequalities that still exist and what we can do to contribute to this change. Changes must begin in our homes, in schools, in companies, … not to mention more extreme cases, since, in certain countries, women continue to lack access to basic rights, such as the right to vote, equal pay, greater representation in society, protection in cases of violence, access to education, or even freedom of choice regarding what to wear or do, including about their own bodies.

All these factors, from existing inequalities, discrimination experienced by women, prejudices, violence - often camouflaged -, expectations, as well as a greater number of responsibilities associated with them (for example, domestic overload), among others, influence their mental health - in addition to biological factors that also make women more predisposed to problems in this area.

It is known that one in five women will develop some type of mental disorder during their lifetime; depression is the most common problem, and the incidence rate in women is considerably higher and more persistent compared to men. Some studies also indicate that the leading cause of death in women under 60 is suicide.

Therefore, this date should be yet another reason for us to talk about and value mental health, not only for women, but in general. The assessment should be carried out by specialists in the field – such as psychologists and psychiatrists – who, through observation and the use of instruments, can indicate the best intervention for each case, which may include psychological support, the need for medication, or both.
