The cultural agenda for the first three months of programming is marked by eleven events that include concerts, theater, lectures, gatherings, and presentations, among other activities, thus marking the return of cultural activity to the former thermal spa area of Caldas das Taipas.
In April, the doors to culture reopen at Banhos Velhos. The 2017 cultural season will run until September, but for now, Taipas Termal, the cooperative that manages this space dedicated to culture, is publicizing the first quarter.
In an eclectic cultural agenda, the first event of the season will take place, as usual, on April 24th at 9:30 PM, in partnership with the Núcleo de Estudos 25 de Abril (April 25th Studies Center), with the show “Vozes em Liberdade” (Voices in Freedom), to mark the 43rd anniversary of the April 25th Revolution. The event will feature the participation of AE Briteiros, AE Arqueólogo Mário Cardoso, Academia Ritmos, Academia de Música Fernando Matos, and Sociedade Filarmónica Vizelense.
In May, on the 5th, there will be a discussion presented by Professor António José Oliveira about the role of Banhos Velhos in the development of the hotel and thermal spa industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. On May 13th, there will be a double children's workshop, in partnership with Shortcutz Guimarães, to bring children's short films from the competition's collection to younger audiences. Along with the film screenings, two workshops on creating introductory materials to the audiovisual world will be held. The resulting works from the workshop will later be exhibited at Banhos Velhos. The following weekend will feature a double dose of events with a discussion, in partnership with the newspaper Reflexo, about the 100th anniversary of Ferreira de Castro's literary life, which will include the participation of Professor António José Oliveira and bookseller José Duarte Pereira. On Saturday, May 20th, the first play of 2017 will take place with the ATRAMA theatre company, which will bring Raúl Brandão's work, "O Maior Castigo" (The Greatest Punishment), to the stage at Banhos Velhos. The last weekend of the month will be entirely dedicated to music: on the 26th, there will be a discussion about the 25 editions of the Paredes de Coura festival, which will include João Carvalho from the organization, João Pereira, announcer from Rádio Universitária do Minho, and moderated by Samuel Silva, journalist from the Público newspaper; and to end the month, on the 27th, there will be a double show with Captain Boy and Minta & The Brook Trout.
In June, the month begins with the presentation, on the 3rd, at Banhos Velhos, of the works created in the children's workshops on May 13th. On June 17th, the second musical event takes place, with a show by jazz musician Bruno Pernadas, who will accompany his band on the Banhos Velhos stage. On June 24th, there is another meeting of the Taipas Termal Reading Club, initiated as part of the 2016 cultural program, in partnership with the Sbob bookstore. To close the month of June, there is another theatrical performance by the group "Ao Sabor dos Livros," composed of students and teachers from the Caldas das Taipas Secondary School, interpreting José Saramago's work, "Memorial do Convento." All events are free of charge.
